Biography

Samuel Brown (1776–1852) was an innovative engineer whose experiments with iron chains paved the way for early suspension bridges and advanced marine propulsion. His inventive mind contributed to the safety and progress of maritime travel in a rapidly industrialising Britain.

His grave in West Norwood Cemetery marks the place where admirers of the industrial arts pause to honour a pioneer who helped bridge rivers and seas.
