Biography

Samuel Eliot (1821-1898) served as a historian, educator, and director of the Boston Public Library, championing access to knowledge for citizens of all ages. His scholarly works on American history and his tireless stewardship of the library fostered a deeper public appreciation for the nation's heritage.

He continued to encourage literary and educational pursuits until his final years, and Mount Auburn Cemetery now holds his remains along with the gratitude of countless readers he inspired.
