Biography

Samuel J. Kirkwood (1813-1894) rose from modest beginnings to become the resolute governor of Iowa, a United States senator, and a cabinet officer who earned national respect for his integrity, particularly for his defense of the Union and of civil rights during Reconstruction. His speeches reflected a deep moral commitment to liberty.

After leaving national office he remained active in public affairs and offered wise counsel to younger leaders, and his presence endures in the memories of those who visit his headstone at Oakland Cemetery.
