Samuel J. Reader, born in 1836, embraced Topeka as his home and watched it grow through the trials of settlement and the promise of a bright civic future. He believed in the value of education, kindness, and the quiet perseverance that makes a town strong.

When he passed in 1914, Topeka honored a man whose character reflected the best of its frontier spirit, always lending support to neighbors in need.
