Biography

Samuel Whitside, born in 1839, fought with the cavalry from the outbreak of the Civil War, distinguishing himself in early battles and then leading mounted units across the western frontier as the Army grappled with new challenges on the Plains and in the Southwest.

In his later years he helped establish training standards for the cavalry, guiding officers and enlisted men through the final years of the Indian campaigns, and at his death in 1904 he joined the ranks of the honored dead at Arlington National Cemetery.
