Biography

Sherman Hoar, born in Massachusetts in 1860, followed his father Ebenezer into law and public service, becoming a respected attorney and serving as a U.S. representative in the early 1890s. He championed civil service reform and brought a thoughtful, articulate presence to the Republican delegation.

After leaving Congress, he remained engaged in civic life until his untimely death in 1898; Sleepy Hollow Cemetery holds his remains near those of several family members who also shaped the nation.
