Sir George Harpur Crewe, 8th Baronet

1795–1844 (age 49)

Biography

Sir George Harpur Crewe, 8th Baronet, who was born in 1795, inherited both title and a strong sense of responsibility to the people of Derbyshire. He took to heart the stewardship of his estates, and he spoke with compassion in the Commons for the needs of rural folk and the value of agricultural life.

His hospitality and support for education and relief work endeared him to friends and neighbors, and he is memorialized in the Church of St Giles at Calke, where the quiet strength of his character shines through. He leaves the memory of a baronet who listened before he acted.
