Stephen Decatur Sr. supported the cause of independence as a merchant and privateer, using his resources to aid the Continental effort and setting an example of enterprise in service to country.

His legacy of courage and commitment influenced those around him and is commemorated near the waters he once sailed from, at St. Peter's Churchyard.
