Biography
Susan Maria Hallowell, born in 1835, devoted her life to education and philanthropy, opening doors for girls and young women to learn and to lead. She worked tirelessly to ensure that schools were welcoming, well-resourced places where every student could find encouragement and purpose.
Beyond the classroom she supported charitable efforts that addressed poverty and illness, always insisting that the city’s more fortunate inhabitants respond to the needs of the vulnerable. Her compassionate leadership inspired many, and her grave at Mount Hope Cemetery honors the generosity that defined her years.
