Biography

Sylvanus T. Rugg answered the call to defend the Union, serving as a member of Minnesota's volunteer regiments at a time when the territory was still finding its place in the nation. His comrades praised his steady judgment and willingness to shoulder the burdens of camp life and hostile winters.

After the war he continued to invest in the young Minneapolis community, honoring the memory of fallen friends by supporting veterans' organizations, and when he died in 1881 he was interred at Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldiers Memorial Cemetery with gratitude from the citizens he served.
