Biography
Teófilo Marxuach (1877-1939) served with distinction in the military forces of Puerto Rico and the United States, famously ordering the first shot fired by U.S. forces on behalf of the nation during World War I when he engaged the German supply ship Odenwald.
His long career of leadership and vigilance is honored at Puerto Rico National Cemetery, where he rests among fellow servicemembers.
