Thomas Caverhill Jerdon
1811–1872 (age 61)
Biography
Trained as a physician, Thomas Caverhill Jerdon spent decades in India cataloguing its wildlife and publishing definitive volumes such as the Birds of India, blending medical rigor with an ornithologist’s patience. His writings informed generations of naturalists, and he remained a generous correspondent who championed vaccination and preventive care among the populations he studied.
After returning to England he continued to mentor young scholars until his death, and his grave at West Norwood Cemetery recalls a life at the intersection of healing and natural history.
