Lawyer, politician and Union general

Biography

Thomas Ewing Jr. dedicated his life to the law and public service, serving as a Union general during the Civil War and later carrying that same sense of duty into Congress. He approached the nation's hardest questions with careful reasoning, believing that the rule of law and fairness could bind a divided country together.

After leaving public office he returned to legal practice, counseling clients with the same patience he had shown on the battlefield, and he rests at Oakland Cemetery as one who blended patriotic service with measured judgment.
