Biography
Born in County Limerick, Thomas William Sweeny made his home in America and answered his adopted country’s call with steady courage. After distinguished service in the Mexican-American War, he rose to prominence as a Union general during the Civil War, repeatedly leading troops in battle and refusing to falter even when wounded.
In the decades after the conflict he remained a familiar presence among veterans and observers of military affairs, a testament to the steadfast character he displayed in two wars; those who visit Green-Wood Cemetery today see in his grave a reminder of the devotion he brought to service and the friendships he forged in the ranks.
