Biography
Mary Mallon (1869-1938) was an Irish-born cook whose unwitting role as the nation’s first identified asymptomatic typhoid carrier prompted a transformation in public health surveillance and sanitation practices.
Her decades-long quarantine on North Brother Island concluded with her death and interment at Saint Raymond's Cemetery, where her story continues to remind visitors of the responsibilities and challenges of disease prevention.
