Biography

Urban John Vehr guided the Archdiocese of St. Louis as archbishop beginning in 1946 and became a cardinal in 1965, leading the faithful through a period of vigorous growth and renewed emphasis on education and social outreach. His pastoral letters and devotion to the sacraments strengthened parish life across the region.

Cardinal Vehr championed Catholic schools, hospitals, and charitable agencies, making sure the archdiocese stood at the forefront of service to the poor and immigrant families. Even after retirement his counsel and prayerful presence comforted communities throughout the Midwest.
