Vilate Murray, born in 1806, served as a trusted companion to the leaders of her faith, offering gentle counsel and overseeing hospitable gatherings for newcomers to the settlements that rose in the West.

With a steady hand she tended to the sick, stitched quilts for the needy, and preserved the memories of the era through letters, and when she died in 1867 her service remained a guiding example for those who carried on.
