Biography

Wade Hampton III was born into a prominent South Carolina family and rose to national prominence as one of the Confederacy's most respected cavalry commanders. Following his wartime service he devoted himself to the difficult work of reconciliation, using his reputation to appeal for justice and calm in his home state and beyond.

He served as governor and later as United States senator, where he championed the interests of the state while encouraging progress and honoring the sacrifices of all citizens; he was long admired for his steadfast leadership and passed away in 1902, leaving a legacy of public service.
