Biography

Wager Swayne (1834–1902) distinguished himself as a Union general and later as a Reconstruction official, striving to rebuild the South through fair administration of justice and support for newly freed citizens.

He carried the same sense of duty into civilian life, where he continued to champion education and veterans’ welfare, and his memory is preserved at Arlington National Cemetery.
