William F. Halsey, Sr.
1853–1920 (age 67)
Biography
William F. Halsey, Sr. entered the United States Navy in an era of transition, witnessing the shift from sail to steam and the growth of a modern fleet. His assignments took him to distant stations in the Pacific and Atlantic, where he cultivated the training of young officers and the efficient operation of naval vessels.
He carried these lessons forward through leadership roles ashore, shaping policies that supported the expanding responsibilities of the Navy in the early twentieth century. When he died in 1920, Arlington National Cemetery became the fitting place of rest for a lifelong steward of America’s seas.
