Biography
William George Haan was born in 1863 and graduated from the United States Military Academy, entering a career that would culminate in leading large formations on the battlefields of World War I. His calm leadership during training and mobilization helped prepare the 32nd Division for its crucial role in the final offensives in France.
After the armistice, Haan continued to advise on Army training and organization, drawing on his wartime experience to guide younger leaders. When he died in 1924, he was interred in Arlington National Cemetery, leaving a legacy of steady leadership during America’s coming-of-age as a world power.
