Biography
William Harding Carter, born in 1851, graduated from the United States Military Academy and served with distinction in the Indian Wars, learning the art of cavalry leadership on the western plains. His experiences there forged in him an appreciation for disciplined men and units ready to meet emerging threats.
In later years he championed professional education for officers, pushing for improvements in training and staff work that would serve the United States well in the decades to come. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in 1925, leaving behind a legacy of forward-looking stewardship of the Army.
