Biography

William Matthews (1770–1854) was a man whose long life spanned from the Revolutionary era through the mid-nineteenth century. Born in 1770, he witnessed the founding of the American nation and the subsequent development of the young republic.

Matthews lived to the age of eighty-four, a remarkable longevity for his time, and his final resting place is Mount Olivet Cemetery. His extended life allowed him to observe and participate in the growth and transformation of his community across nearly a century of American history.
