William Phillips, a native son born in 1824, witnessed Marietta's growth from a frontier town into a thriving center of commerce and civic life.

He matched that transformation with an unassuming leadership, keeping the community anchored in honesty, hard work, and a willingness to listen, and he treasured the friendships formed throughout his long residency; Marietta City Cemetery is his resting place.
