Biography
William Preble Hall entered service as sectional tensions gave way to open conflict, and from his early days he was known for attention to detail and a calm demeanor in stressful campaigns. Over the years he balanced frontier duty with staff positions, contributing to the Army’s professional development amid rapid national growth.
Hall’s later years included oversight of garrisons and training programs that prepared young soldiers for service around the globe. He was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery in 1927, remembered for shaping a diligent and reliable Army.
