Biography

William S. Hofstra, born in 1861, built a successful career in the furniture industry while remaining mindful of the responsibilities that come with prosperity. He valued education and community, thoughtfully stewarding resources to promote the welfare of future generations.

Though he passed before seeing his estate become a university, the generous spirit he fostered helped lay the groundwork for what would grow into Hofstra University, a lasting tribute to his love of learning; he is interred at Woodlawn Cemetery.
