Biography
William T. Spear, born in 1834, entered public life with the conviction that government should support hardworking citizens. As a U.S. Representative from Ohio he promoted sound financial stewardship, fair taxation, and the improvement of river and rail links that sustained commerce.
After leaving Congress he remained active in veterans’ affairs and the establishment of libraries, and he could often be found offering encouragement to young leaders in the Oakwood community. His calm demeanor and deep respect for others stayed with him until the end of his days.
