Biography
William Tecumsah Avery (1819-1880) answered the call to public life as U.S. Representative from Tennessee, advocating for improvements in transportation and communication that would bind his constituents to the wider republic.
After leaving Congress he returned to his home community, where he continued to advise young leaders and encourage civic participation, and he is remembered beneath the elms of Elmwood Cemetery.
