Yosef Haim Brenner
1881–1921 (age 40)
Biography
Yosef Haim Brenner was a pioneering Hebrew novelist and essayist whose stark, introspective prose portrayed the struggles of Jews in both Eastern Europe and the fledgling Yishuv.
He helped create new literary journals, mentored younger writers, and even after his untimely death in the Jaffa riots of 1921 his works continued to shape Hebrew culture; he now lies in Trumpeldor Cemetery among the founders of modern Hebrew letters.
