Biography

Abner Doubleday (1819–1893) served as a Union general whose steadfast leadership carried him through many of the Civil War’s defining battles, including Gettysburg, where he played a crucial role in rallying troops under extreme pressure. Known for his calm demeanor, he was trusted to hold the line when fortunes of war shifted.

After the conflict he continued to serve his country in the regular army and later oversaw coastal defenses, embodying a life-long commitment to duty that is honored by his grave in Arlington National Cemetery.
