Stephen W. Kearny

Biography

Stephen W. Kearny first gained national notice during the War of 1812 and rose to the rank of general, later leading the Army of the West into New Mexico and California during the Mexican-American War.

He served as military governor and administrator of the newly acquired territories, striving to bring stable governance to unsettled lands, and his burial at Bellefontaine Cemetery honors his service during a pivotal chapter of American expansion.
