Biography
Abraham Haas, born in 1847, emigrated from Germany and became a pioneering grocer in California, building a wholesale business that helped feed a growing region and later became part of what is known today as Smart & Final. He focused on quality, innovation, and fair dealing, creating jobs and trust across the developing state.
He gave back quietly to synagogues, schools, and charitable organizations, modeling a life of entrepreneurship rooted in community, and he now rests at Home of Peace Cemetery and Emanu-El Mausoleum with the legacy of the Haas family’s civic engagement.
