Absalom Baird

Biography

Absalom Baird (1824-1905) rose to the rank of general through steadfast leadership and a patient, thoughtful approach to strategy. He served with distinction during the Civil War and continued to support the army afterward, seeking to build institutions that preserved the republic he helped defend.

His grave at Arlington National Cemetery preserves the memory of a leader whose calm assurance and unwavering principles were a source of strength in turbulent times.
