Biography
Benedict Crowell (1869–1952) brought his organizational gifts to the United States Army as a senior official, serving as Assistant Secretary of War during World War I and guiding the Council of National Defense. His leadership helped orchestrate industrial mobilization, procurement, and the complex requirements of equipping the American Expeditionary Forces.
After the war he remained engaged in efforts to strengthen the nation’s preparedness and to honor those who had served, combining patriotism with thoughtful stewardship. He rests at Arlington National Cemetery as a reminder of his service in both uniform and civilian government.
