Benjamin Lincoln

Biography

Benjamin Lincoln, born in 1733, rose from the Massachusetts countryside to become a major general in the Continental Army, participating in the relief of Boston, the Saratoga campaigns, and ultimately accepting the British surrender at Yorktown. His steady presence at the head of troops and his willingness to do the unglamorous work of quartermaster and inspector made him indispensable throughout the Revolution.

After the war he continued to serve the republic, acting as Secretary at War and supporting the militia, leaving behind a life of sacrifice and leadership now revered at Hingham Cemetery.
