Biography
Bruce McCandless II brought courage and precision to his naval career and to his NASA missions, most famously making history with the first untethered spacewalk using the Manned Maneuvering Unit and demonstrating the human ability to move freely in orbit.
He spent his later years mentoring the next generation of explorers and sharing stories of teamwork and trust, and his memory is cherished at the United States Naval Academy Cemetery.
