Catherine Nuth

Biography

Catherine Nuth (1757–1811) was among the early residents of what became Washington, D.C., and her steady presence helped sustain the growing city as it took shape at the turn of the century. She balanced daily life with the demands of a new federal capital, providing care and hospitality within her household as the community matured.

She is memorialized in Rock Creek Cemetery, where her grave recalls the quiet dedication of a woman whose life overlapped the founding of the Republic and its nascent capital.
