Charles A. Gabriel, born in 1928, rose through the ranks of the U.S. Air Force to become its Chief of Staff, guiding the service through a period of modernization while nurturing the airmen and airwomen who defended American interests around the globe.

His leadership emphasized readiness and ethical command, and the nation later honored him with interment at Arlington National Cemetery.
