Biography
Charles Carleton Coffin was a Boston newspaperman whose dispatches from the front ranks of the Civil War introduced readers to the battles of the Potomac and Tennessee, forging both national interest and compassion through vivid narrative. His eyewitness accounts helped people far from the fighting understand the courage and chaos of the struggle.
After hostilities ceased he turned his pen to books about the war and pursued other reporting assignments, continuing to lecture and write so that the sacrifice of the conflict would not fade from public memory.
