Charles Courtice Alderton
1857–1941 (age 84)
Biography
Pharmacist Charles Courtice Alderton tinkered with flavors at Waco's Old Corner Drug Store, and in 1885 he blended a mixture of fruit syrups, spices, and carbonated water to create a drink he called Dr Pepper. His patrons appreciated the lively taste, and the beverage soon became a local sensation before journeying across the nation.
Though the drink became famous, he remained modest, returning to his trade, mentoring apprentices, and keeping a hand in the pharmacy; Oakwood Cemetery now marks the final chapter of a man whose curiosity added a timeless refreshment to American culture.
