Biography

Clemence Sophia Harned Lozier, born in 1813, rose to prominence as a pioneering physician whose conviction that women could heal as skillfully as men guided her through decades of study and practice. She founded a New York medical college for women, mentored scores of young women pursuing the healing arts, and led by example to make space for female leadership in a field in need of compassionate reform.

Throughout her life she lent her energy to improving health care for underserved women and children, championed educational opportunities, and engaged in civic efforts that left a mark on her city, a legacy now honored in her resting place at Green-Wood Cemetery.
