Biography
Cortlandt Whitehead (1842–1922) lived through the upheaval of the Civil War and the rebuilding that followed, a witness to the ways in which his city transformed itself while holding onto its shared sense of purpose. He nurtured in others the resolve to keep community ties strong and to live responsibly through every season.
Allegheny Cemetery preserves his name as part of the constellation of citizens who kept faith with their neighbors and sought to leave the next generation with an unshaken foundation.
