Daniel L. Braine
1829–1898 (age 69)
Naval Officer
Biography
Daniel L. Braine spent a lifetime in the service of the United States Navy, joining the Academy as a youth and sailing through decades of changing technology and new challenges. He served during the Civil War and afterward took on commands that tested both seamanship and administrative skill, earning the respect of sailors under his charge.
In later years he remained engaged with the Navy’s traditions, offering counsel to younger officers and exemplifying the measured leadership of a long-serving officer; his presence at Green-Wood Cemetery invites reflection on the many men and women who sustain the service quietly over a lifetime.
