Biography
Edward M. McCook (1833-1909) was a Union cavalry general who later served as governor of the Colorado Territory and as a U.S. diplomat. He was renowned for his cool, decisive leadership in battle and for seeking to ensure that veterans were treated with fairness.
In later years he worked to bridge divides between East and West, championed education for frontier children, and remained engaged in missionary and philanthropic efforts. McCook's discipline and compassion left an imprint on both military comrades and civic life.
