Ezra Ripley

Biography

Ezra Ripley (1826–1863) was an intellectual whose brief life was marked by engagement with the ideas and culture of his time. Though his years were few, his intellectual pursuits and contributions reflected the vibrant intellectual climate of nineteenth-century New England.

Ripley's memory is preserved at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where he was laid to rest in his youth. His life, though short, represents the promise and potential of young intellectuals whose early deaths cut short what might have been significant contributions to American thought and culture.
