Biography

Fanny Fern, the pen name of Sara Willis, was born in 1811 and became one of the most popular columnists of her day, bringing wit and humanity to the pages of The New York Ledger and other publications. Her essays and novels, particularly "Ruth Hall," combined humor with earnest advocacy for women's independence and fair treatment.

Through candid observations of family life and keen social commentary, she inspired readers to question domestic expectations and to seek financial and creative autonomy; her spirited voice is honored today at Mount Auburn Cemetery.
