Naval Officer
Biography
Francis Cogswell graduated from the Naval Academy and sailed in a generation that saw the Navy expand rapidly, earning trust as a navigator and tactician aboard cruisers deployed around the globe. During World War I he served in the Atlantic, helping protect convoys and maintain the flow of men and materials to overseas forces.
In the interwar years he turned his attention to mentoring young officers, sharing lessons from wartime service and helping refine the gunnery and seamanship that remained the core of naval professionalism, a legacy honored when a later destroyer bore his name. He spent his final years reflecting on a lifetime at sea, leaving behind sailors who remembered his calm judgment.
