Biography
George Barnett rose through the ranks to become the twelfth Commandant of the Marine Corps, guiding the Corps through the turbulent years of World War I and overseeing its rapid expansion and professionalization. Under his leadership Marines honed amphibious tactics and modern training regimens that would serve them for generations.
After the war he worked to balance readiness with the well-being of the force, championing the virtues of discipline, education, and esprit de corps before retiring to a lifetime of quiet counsel; he now rests at Arlington National Cemetery with the Marines he so deeply served.
