George Crook

Biography

George Crook (1828–1890) earned a reputation as a compassionate yet firm commander during the Civil War and the subsequent campaigns in the West, where he sought more humane treatment of Native American tribes while still achieving military objectives. His careful planning and insistence on fair conduct set him apart among his peers.

Even in retirement his name remained synonymous with integrity, and Arlington National Cemetery now holds his remains as a reminder of a general who balanced valor with conscience.
