Biography

George Dilboy came to the United States as a young Greek immigrant and answered the call to serve in the American Expeditionary Forces when World War I engulfed Europe. He demonstrated remarkable courage during the fighting near Belleau Wood, where he braved heavy fire to rescue wounded comrades and continue the advance despite being wounded himself.

While he was killed in action in 1918, his bravery inspired his fellow soldiers and his family. Arlington National Cemetery now holds his remains, where the nation honors him as the first Greek-American recipient of the Medal of Honor and a symbol of devotion to the ideals of liberty.
